The Portrait Mode uses a 2x digital zoom on the main camera while the telephoto creates the depth map. You can check it by looking to the picture resolution: 6mpx instead of 12 (image cropped -> digital zoom applied)My photos when using portrait mode is only 3,6mp and the photos using digital zoom still stays at 12,2mp.
